Is it technical writing – or is it anti-technical writing? What’s the difference?
Technical writing explains technical material – data, chemical formulas, surgical procedures – to people in the same technical field.
Anti-technical writing takes the tech out of your copy and explains it clearly, concisely, to audiences from different backgrounds. For instance:
• You manage the computers for hundreds of people, and you write manuals telling people how to approach their desktop on Monday morning. Do you want it in technical language – or in common English that everyone understands?
• You perform surgery and need to explain the procedures in language that does not mention narcolepsy, nasal prostheses or necrobiosis. Do you want it in technical language – or in common English that everyone understands?
• You manufacture dangerous chemicals and need to write anti-technical explanations of the risks to potential truckers. Do you want it in technical language – or in common English that everyone understands?
You want anti-tech writing to explain your expertise to clients and customers in other fields. I have written anti-technical copy for
• Arkema, Inc.
• Bala Consulting Engineers.
• Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll.
• Campbell Soup Company.
• Free Library of Philadelphia.
• KlingStubbins Architecture.
• O’Donnell & Naccarato Engineering.
Please call or write to discuss your situation. Whether you are located in the Philadelphia area or beyond, I can help.
Testimonial “Susan did an excellent job of explaining a very complicated and somewhat boring process in an interesting, readable way.” Diane Cornell, Editor
